Better news from the high street this week as sales figures from the BDO Stoy Hayward’s High Street Sales Tracker for the week ending 21 June 2009 indicate that an early start to summer sales helped retailers enjoy their highest growth since Easter.
Total sales were up by 6 percent on a like for like basis, with sales in the fashion sector rising by 8.1 percent, possibly due the tactic of entering sales mode slightly earlier this year.
In other sectors, non-fashion sales were up by 7.8 percent compared to the same week last year, with generally strong demand for gifts and luxury products on the back of Father’s Day and early sales.
Non-store sales were also up by 40 percent compared to last year, although this is a slightly weaker performance compared to the previous week.
Homeware sales were once again back in negative territory however, with a drop of 10.2 percent.
