E-tail Sales Growth at Record Low For January

Like-for-like sales rose only 5 per cent from January 2009 to January 2010, the lowest annual growth rate in the history of the e-Retail Sales Index.

IMRG reported that UK shoppers spent £4.3billion online in January 2010. The weaker than expected annual growth in January followed strong December 2009 sales and monthly growth fell 22 per cent from December to January. Although this is in line with the seasonal trend of sales falling after a Christmas surge, the decline is greater than in recent years.

It is thought that less retailer discounting and an increase in VAT in January had an impact on the online retail sector during January.

Chris Webster, the Vice President of Retail Consulting and Technology for Capgemini, explained: "While annual growth for e-retail was slow in January, we should factor in the fact that December was a very strong month for the industry."
